Recent press reports claim that new research shows that being overweight does not increase one's risk of mortality, and may even decrease it slightly. The obvious implication is that people who are slightly overweight need not worry about dieting. Actually this is not that new. Studies we have summarized to date were not able to determine conclusively that there is any added mortality risk in being overweight (having a BMI - Body Mass Index - above 25, but below 30).
