Does exercise help obese people stay healthy?

A recent article in the New England Journal of Medicine (v 351, p 2694, 2004) presents results of a study that examines whether obese people who are physically active have a mortality risk comparable to that of people with a normal Body Mass Index (a measure of obesity). The study concluded that even for physically active women, obesity almost doubled the death rate during the study period. Women who were not physically active, had an even higher risk. So exercising does help, but not enough to offset the risks associated with obesity!

Further details are presented in our obesity study.
